Rahul is a 7 month old boy from Begusarai, Bihar. His father Vikas Patel, 30 years old, works as a daily wage laborer and works at a construction sites to earn a living. He earns 300 rupees per day and usually manages to earn around 4000 rupees per month. The couple has two more children who are elder to Rahul.
Rahul had pneumonia when he turned 2 months old. The doctors detected a Congenital Heart Defect after conducting a 2D Echocardiography test. It was a tormenting period for Rahul and his parents as they took him to several hospitals in Bihar, West Bengal and a Government Hospital in Delhi. Vikas told us `I was advised to take him to Mumbai or Delhi. But for someone like me who hasn’t travelled beyond my village, I was very apprehensive. I was also told the surgery would cost anything between 2 to 3 lacs rupees which I would never be able to pay. I am a laborer, I earn just enough to feed my family on a daily basis.’
After a long struggle, a doctor at AIIMS advised the family to visit Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurugram. The family consulted a Pediatric Cardiologist and cardiac surgeon on 6th November 2017, where Rahul was advised a Ventricular septal defect closure (VSD closure).
Rahul had a successful surgery and his treatment was supported by Fortis Foundation and RMMMRT (Radha Mohan Mehrotra Medical Relief Trust).
His mother Khushboo says `We stayed in the premises of the hospital, where they took good care of our child. We did not pay for the surgery. We are glad to have our child back.’
